Authentic Life: This is Who He is to Believers

Today’s Reading: Matthew 16:13-20

Today’s Verse: He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Matthew 16:15 KJV

Knowing who we are plays a major part in our lives.

It is used to define the characteristics by which we are recognized or known.

There should be a desire to be recognized as someone that trusts in the Lord for guidance.

Showing we know who He is and what He has planned for our lives.

In this Chapter we see where the Savior has cautioned the disciples.

They are to beware of the doctrines of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

Both were opposed to each other in principles and in conduct.

But were joined when it came to being against Him.

They desired to ignore the signs of God’s ordaining.

They wanted to do things their way (Matthew 16:1-4 KJV).

He was warning the disciples not to identify themselves in this same manner.

To make sure they understood who they should be following.

So, He asked them this question, “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” (Matthew 16:13 KJV).

They replied that some say that He was John the Baptist.

Some said He was Elijah,

Some thought He was Jeremiah or one of the prophets (Matthew 16:14 KJV).

Yes, it certainly was a compliment to be named with the great prophets of Israel.

They had an influence on the lives of those around them.

But the Savior was not seeking compliments.

He wanted to make sure they had a clear understanding of who He was.

Trying to see where they stood regarding their faith.

Making sure they identified themselves with the right person.

That is why He asked them, “But whom say ye that I am?” (Matthew 16:15 KJV).

“And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16 KJV).

Peter knew the truth of the Savior’s identity.

He was not afraid to let others know that he had knowledge of this.

We can look for our identity anywhere, but as followers of Christ, we are to find our identity in Him.

There will always be a need for self-denial.

Because the Savior longs for us to know Him.

To know of His recuing love.

To always remember that we are to identify ourselves with Him.

An identity that will always shine in darkness.

Because He is the “fountain of life.”

And His light lets us enjoy life (Psalms 36:9 KJV).

A WORD OF PRAYER

Savior, there will always be a time when we have to answer the question regarding our knowledge of You. And we really have a relationship with You. Let our answer be “Yes.” Each day may we desire to know You better. Learning more about Your wonderful ways. Finding our true identity as we follow You with our whole heart. Coming to know You and feel Your rescuing love is what we want for our lives. Thank You for helping us stand in faith.

In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
