Listening: The Greatest Gift That Comes from the Heart

Today’s Reading: Job 31:33-40 / Job 2:11-13

Today’s Verse: Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book. Job 31:35 KJV

Listening is the act of paying attention.

Sometimes in our lives, we all have pains. We all have sorrows.

We need someone we can talk to. Someone who will really listen.

When truly listening to another person, we hear what they are saying. We try to understand what it means. To help them as much as we can.

In this passage, Job was seeking help from his friends.

Some of them showed up.

“So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great” (Job 2:17 KJV).

They did not listen when Job began to talk.

When they talked, they failed to comfort him (Job 16:2 KJV).

“Oh that one would hear me!” was Job’s desire (Job 31:35 KJV).

He felt that they were not listening to what he was saying.

Listening to each other says, “What matters to you matters to me.”

Listening can be hard work.

There will be times when someone does want advice. Sometimes they just want someone who loves and cares enough about them to listen.

Heavy loads. We all have to carry them at some point in our lives.

Those are the times we have to be willing and able to listen long enough to hear the other person’s true heart. So, when we do speak, we speak with gentle wisdom.

With the Lord on our side, we can have a loving heart and a listening ear.

A WORD OF PRAYER

Father, we know through You we can learn all things. You desire that we be there for one another. Through the thick and the thin. Give us a loving heart and a listening ear to help one another. Praying for the wisdom and guidance we need. Knowing that You will lighten up our heavy loads. With You all things are possible. Thank You for always having a listening ear. For continuing to teach us how to have one also. For always being there for us. We could not make it without You.

In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
