Our Work History

Read: Ecclesiastes 3:6-12 / Genesis 2:8-17

What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? Ecclesiastes 3:9 KJV

The desire to always be doing something is commendable.

But someone who is working for work’s sake is said to have what is called a “futility complex.”

They work every day and never use the leave they have earned.

Employers are pleased when employees give their all to the job.

But they also know it is in the employees’ best interest to take time off to rest when they don’t feel well or take a vacation and enjoy life.

Knowing that their work has a great impact on producing what is needed.

The same holds true when it comes to our working as partners with God for the good of His people.

This partnership started with Adam.

God employed him as a gardener to “subdue” the earth (Genesis 1:28) and “to tend and keep” the garden (Genesis 2:15).

But even during it all God took a day off.

He “ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. (Genesis 2:2)

His work was done with ease, joy, and fulfillment in a perfect environment.

God’s plan was for the world to be found altogether wise, just, and good.

Unfortunately, sin changed man’s working conditions.

Causing God to take other actions.

His curse in Genesis 3:17, was not because of the work itself, but on the ground.

The ground would resist mankind’s efforts and make survival difficult.

That was even for man’s well-being.

The same holds true with our earthly work lives.

Spiritually, the burden of work reminds man of sin’s punishments and the need for mercy and salvation, which God freely offers us.

Sometimes things get hard, but what is produced shows we have a labor of love for Christ.

It is good and honest work.

A WORD OF PRAYER

Lord, we know You have a purpose for our lives. That we have every opportunity to do good. In all we do, let us remember that we can work hard all day, but to take a rest. Ensuring that we don’t lose track and allow sinful things to change our work ethics.

In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
