Today’s Reading: Psalms 51:7-15
Today’s Verse: “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.” Psalms 51:7 KJV
When cleaning, we want to use top-quality products. We want to ensure everything we clean is spotless.
In the Old Testament, people used the hyssop plant to represent cleansing. Priests used it to sprinkle sacrificial blood for cleansing.
They used it for those with leprosy.
David did not want just physical cleansing. He desired spiritual cleansing for his sin.
He knew his sin had defiled his soul. He needed a deeper cleansing.
He made a plea to God. To wash away his sins. To purify his spirit.
He knew that God had a way to make it happen. That there would be a blood sacrifice made for all mankind.
His prayer gave meaning to the New Testament. To the fact that the “blood of Christ” would serve as the ultimate method for cleansing sin.
After his confession of sin, David’s plea continues.
He prayed that God would “create in [him] a clean heart’ and “renew a right spirit within [him]” (Psalms 51:10 KJV).
He wanted to be “whiter than snow” (Psalms 51:7 KJV).
This request was greater than anything the earth could provide.
But he knew that God was a God of forgiveness. That God would cleanse him of his sin. That he would be made whole.
The use of hyssop in the New Testament at the crucifixion.
It signifies that Jesus is the final sacrifice. That His blood provides eternal purification and redemption from sin (John 19:29 KJV).
The final, spiritual cleansing from sin for believers.
Like David, let us recognize and admit our wrongdoings. Have a willingness to turn away from sin. Ask for forgiveness and move toward a more righteous path.
A WORD OF PRAYER
Father, we know You are the God of salvation. The One who can deliver us from guilt, sin and shame. You are everything to us. Let us speak words of praise when we open our lips. We will forever thank You for Your forgiving mercies. Thank You for letting us come to You in prayer. Restoring the joy of Your salvation in us. Creating in us a clean heart. Renewing a right spirit in us. Making us whiter than snow. Thank You for Your mercy. Thank You for Your willing Spirit to forgive us.
In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
