Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 KJV
I was reading a devotional that was talking about a game of bowling in which you couldn’t see the pins you were trying to hit.
How a perfect game was bowled by a gentleman named Bill Knox, in 1933.
It caught my interest, because many years ago I use to be on a bowling team and wondered how it related to the Word,
This gentleman had a screen placed just above the foul line to obscure his view of the lane.
He was demonstrating a technique known as spot bowling.
It is a technique used by rolling the ball at a selected floor mark on the near end of the lane.
Bill was using the strategy to show that you can get a good outcome when you can aim at the mark closest to you.
The one that is in line with the pins.
He bowled a perfect game of 300. Twelve (12) strikes in a row.
A prime example of why spot bowling would be a wise approach to life.
How good things happen when we can aim at the mark closest to us and get us the best outcome.
Knowing the Lord and His Word is that mark.
In Paul’s writing to the Thessalonians, it was about the return of Christ.
A reminder to them that the ultimate goal of their salvation was to “be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (v. 23).
To strive to be perfect in all our doings.
Paul took the time to teach them to focus their eyes on a period of time when their actions were in line with that goal.
Earnestly encouraging them to continue to comfort one another, help the weak, and warn those that are stubborn to change their ways.
No matter the screen placed in their lives, they should stay in the Word, continue to pray, without ceasing and always have of spirit of rejoicing.
We are to practice doing the same thing.
Doing all these things in the power of God who is working in us (vv. 23-24).
Just like Bill had the ability to bowl a perfect game, we have the ability to strive to live a perfect life.
A WORD OF PRAYER
Lord, by walking daily in the Light, we keep eternity’s goal in sight. Help us to see what we can do today that will keep us focused. No matter what man does to us, we must do good to others. We are striving for the perfect game that ends in us living a perfect life.
In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
