A Plumbline

Read: Amos 7:5-11

And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more. Amos 7:8 KJV

A plumbline is a piece of string that has a weight attached to it.

It is used to check that something, like a wall, is vertical or it is supposed to have a slope that it is at the correct angle.

Bricklayers would use this method to make sure there wasn’t a need to correct what might be out of line.

Amos had a vision.

In this vision, he saw the Lord holding a plumbline.

It represented Israel.

The Lord had made the nation straight and true, but they were beginning to lean in the wrong direction.

They were no longer adhering to the Word.

The Lord is our plumbline.

He has many ways of humbling a sinful nation.

When we look at His life and compare our lives to His, we see how far out of line we are from what God requires.

Whatever trouble we find ourselves in, we should be seriously asking God for the forgiveness of our sins.

The more we strive to pray, study the Word, and obey His Spirit, little by little He will straighten us out and keep us straight.

A WORD OF PRAYER

Lord, we know our plumbline needs to be checked on a regular basis. The standard of Your Word is the guidelines we need to follow. The best way to test and see if we are leaning in the right direction. Praying and receiving Your mercy. You are the only builder that can straighten out a corked life. Thank You for saying we are still Yours and taking care of us.

In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
