That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. John 17:21 KJV
Unity is the state of being one.
We all know that with any organization, group, or congregation, there is a need for unity.
It is a time when all those involved must work together.
Coming to an understanding that we can’t live without each other’s helping hand.
Setting aside all our differences and becoming one.
In this reading, Jesus was praying that believers would have unity with each other.
Just like He had with the Father.
As we obey the Father and draw on His love, the Holy Spirit creates a sense of oneness between us.
A oneness that has no denominational labels.
For Christians, unity must come from the inside out.
Spiritually, it is peace in the presence of conflict.
Love in the presence of hatred.
Forgiveness in the presence of injury.
When we show unity, we honor God.
God loves each of us equally.
If we profess to be His, then we should be doing the same.
It is His commandment.
We are to let nothing cause us to argue over anything.
The Lord has told us, when we fight against each other and His Word, we will not stand.
“And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:26-27).
There is no peace, love, or forgiveness.
We should be striving to come together as one, so the world may believe that the Lord has sent us, and we are on the same page.
That our unity is not one, that like the foolish man, is built on sand.
That our unity is built on a Solid Rock.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock” (Matthew 7:24-25).
A sure foundation that will never cease to stand.
It will stand the test of time.
Our Solid Rock is Jesus and His Word.
We are one when we follow His leading.
A WORD OF PRAYER
Lord, we know that unity among believers come from our union with You. We are blessed when our hearts are bound in Christian love. Knowing that whatever our differences may be, You have the final say and we must follow Your lead. Like the song says, “on Christ the Solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.”
In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
