Quench not the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 KJV
To quench means to put out or extinguish something.
Most of the time we think of a fire.
But the fire we have never needs to be quenched.
In today’s Scripture reading, Apostle Paul, is telling us how to keep our enthusiasm for God.
His testimony, teaching, and living was characterized by his enthusiasm.
He is telling us to not rejoice in the things of the earth, but to rejoice in the things of God.
Our living for Christ does not have to appear to be what most consider a lack of liveliness and excitement.
We are to “Quench not the Spirit.”
We are baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire.
A fire that enlightens, enlivens, and purifies the souls of all men.
We extinguish this fire when our actions hinder the Spirit from doing what God could do through us.
Our fire power is expressed through the gifts of the Spirit.
If it is put out, let us ask the Lord to rekindle the fire in our hearts.
Showing that we desire to keep our lives on fire for Him.
Let the fire burn.
A WORD OF PRAYER
Lord, as believers, we often hinder our growth in grace, by not giving ourselves up to the spiritual affections raised in our hearts by the Spirit. We know that when the Spirit is not quenched in us, we can manifest Your power. Let us stay on fire in our work and in our witnessing. A soul on fire for God is the most powerful influence on the earth.
In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
