The Heart of Fasting

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace. Zechariah 8:19 KJV

Fasting is a way for us to focus on God and what He needs us to know.

The Bible teaches that fasting is a form of spiritual discipline.

It is a duty required of the disciples of Christ.

Fasting is the humbling of the soul (Psalms 35:13).

A time when we truly listen and allow the Lord to speak to us.

When we fast, we stop eating completely for a specified amount of time.

A fast can last for 12 to 24 hours, depending on the guidance we are receiving.

It could be longer.

Jesus did it for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4;2, Luke 4:2).

In some cases, especially if we have a physical disability, we are allowed, with limitations, to have water or certain foods during the fasting period.

Fasting brings us closer to God, as well as, gives us spiritual freedom and guidance.

It should be done without advertising to the world and not with sad facial expressions (Matthew 6:16-18).

God even told His people through the prophet Zechariah that what they called fasting was useless.

All because it was not leading to a service to the poor (Zechariah 7:5).

That it was not being done from the heart.

He even asked them if their fasting was really for Him.

God sees in secret, and will reward openly.

We all must be faithful and honest in all our dealings.

By continuing to serve ourselves, we are failing to draw closer to God’s heart.

Fasting and praying, “spiritual discipline”, is the key to changing our situations.

It will make us sit down and listen to what He is trying to place in our hearts and minds.

Knowing that as we grow and draw closer to Jesus, we will gain a heart for those He loves.

It shall be to the house of Judah joy, gladness, and cheerful feasts.

Let the truths of God rule in our heads.

Let the peace of God rule in our hearts.

A WORD OF PRAYER

Lord, we know that You expect Your followers to fast. That fasting is a way for us to draw nearer to You and get the guidance we need to obtain spiritual freedom, as well as healthy bodies. May we continue to please You and serve others.

In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
