A Crown of Thorns Becomes a Crown of Life

Read: Matthew 27:25-31

And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! Matthew 27:28-29 KJV

Crucifixion is defined as the execution of a person by nailing or binding them to a cross.

In the Bible it was a death sentence used only among the Romans.

A cross was laid on the ground, to which the hands and feet of the person were nailed.

The cross was then lifted and fixed upright.

This was done so that the weight of the body hung on the nails would cause much pain, and the pain would continue until the sufferer died in agony.

It was very terrible and painful death sentence.

But our Savior faced even more before His death sentence took place.

The Roman soldiers made a crown of thorns and placed it upon His head. They put a reed in His right hand, then bowed their knee before Him and mocked Him saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29).

Then they spit on Jesus, took the reed back, and hit Him on the head. They took the robe they put on Him off and put His own clothing back on Him. They then forced Him to carry the cross to the spot to where they were going to crucify Him (Matthew 27:30-31).

One could only imagine the pain and suffering our Saviour was going through.

We know God could have stopped it at any time, but He was allowing it for a reason.

The Romans Soldiers did not realize it, but their actions opened the doors of salvation and would still influence our lives thousands and thousands of years later.

That the man they were putting to death was no ordinary King.

He was the King of Kings, sent by the Father, whose death, followed by His coming back to life, would be the sacrifice that gives us eternal life.

We are approaching what is known as Easter Sunday, better known as “Resurrection Sunday”.

A day that we take the time to think about what the Lord did for us.

Every day should be “Resurrection Sunday”.

We should always take the time to appreciate that fact that the Lord cared enough about us to sacrifice His life.

Take the time to celebrate the gift of forgiveness and new life that the Lord has afforded every one of us.

There is so much joy and thankfulness to be felt in knowing and acknowledging that God sent His Son to erase our sins and give us freedom and life forever in Him.

Let us give Him praise for all He has done and is doing in our lives.

The Lord’s crown of thorns has become our crown of life.

A WORD OF PRAYER

Savior, our hearts hurt when we think about the pain and suffering You went through for us. That the Father loved us so much to send His only begotten son to die on the cross for us. That You were willing to die for us. Thank You for the gift of forgiveness and love that sets us free from sin and a spiritual death. You are the crown of life. May we wear it well.

In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
