And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15 KJV
There are many books and programs that help with financial planning.
They offer good advice on how we can cut costs and still live like a millionaire.
But our best advice comes from the Lord and the reading of the Word.
He wants us to handle what God has blessed us with in the right way.
He does not want us to get caught up in the joys of the world.
Cautioning us against being the one who shows a strong desire for material things.
In the Bible there is a parable, which shows how having a strong desire for material things while we live cand lead to misery when we die (vv.16-23).
The individual was a worldly man who did not have a grateful regard for the protective care of God, how to handle human affairs, the worth of his soul and the importance of what the end of life would be.
Where he would spend eternity.
His concerns were that he had a great crop and that he did not have enough room to store them.
He decided he would “pull down [his] barns, and build greater; and there [he would] bestow all [his] fruits and [his] goods (v.18).
He took no thought about thanking God for it or rejoicing that he would be able to do more good by helping someone else.
In the end, he was causing himself more harm than good.
Covetousness is a sin that we all need to be constantly warned about (v.15).
Our true happiness and comfort do not depend on the wealth of this world.
Because the things of the world will not satisfy the desires of our soul.
We are responsible for using what God has blessed us with wisely.
The words Jesus spoke in this parable remind us to check our motivation.
To, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (Luke 12:15 NIV).
That we are not to lose focus on what God really desires for our lives.
Knowing and trusting Him, as well as, serving others. Not worrying about our own future (vv. 29-31).
God’s kingdom is spiritual, and not of this world.
As we live for Him, freely sharing with others, we can truly enjoy a rich life with Him now (vv.32-34).
A WORD OR PRAYER
Father, we need a constant reminder that covetousness is a sin. That happiness and comfort do not depend on the wealth of this world. Because the things of this world will not satisfy the desires of our souls. Thank You for all the provisions You have so generously made for us. You know exactly what we need. Please continue to show us how to enjoy what we have and to share them with others.
In Jesus Name We Pray, Amen
