Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. Genesis 13:11 KJV
The story of Abram and Lot tells us about an uncle and nephew who had some problems with flocks and herds overwhelming the land on which they dwelled.
That “there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite [the unbelieving community] dwelled then in the land” (v.7).
Abram told Lot that he prayed there would be no strife between them and between their herdsmen (v.8).
To resolve the issue, Abram suggested they separate themselves (v.9).
Abram knew that rather than arguing, he would trust God to take care of him and provide for his needs.
They began to look at the land before them.
Abram told Lot, that if he wanted to take the left hand, that he would go to the right, or if Lot wanted the right hand, he would take the left.
Lot chose the plain of Jordan and journeyed there (v.11).
He was looking to the goodness of the land.
Having no doubt that in such a fruitful soil he would thrive.
But because he was being guided and governed by the lust of the flesh and what he was seeing, he forgot about God and in the end lost it all.
Abram, on the other hand, took what was left.
Because of his faith, despite the wickedness of the men in Sodom, he was blessed and gained the promised land (vv.12-17).
He did not let anything keep him for praising God for all He had and was doing for him.
We are not to let the choices we make in life be guided or governed by the lust of the flesh, of the eye or the pride of life.
When we do, we cannot expect God’s presence or blessings to fill our lives.
It can cause harm in our relationships and our overall livelihood.
We are to be like Abram and keep a cool spirit and desire to keep the peace.
Abounding in the promises of God.
Watching the blessings, He has for us overflow in our lives.
