Today’s Reading: Psalms 121
Today’s Verse: “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.” Psalms 121: 1-3 KJV
Things happen in our lives that can give us the feeling of being alone. Family and friends will try to be there, but there are times when they cannot be.
Today’s passage reminds us that we have someone we can depend on.
Psalms 121 is part of the “Songs of Ascents” (Psalms 120-134). This is a time when ancient pilgrims sang while traveling up to Jerusalem.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help” (v.1.). When the ancient travelers were journeying to Jerusalem, they would often look up at the hills. Some say it could represent physical dangers, such as hidden robbers or pagan sinners. Others would say it was a symbol that they were looking toward Mount Zion where God was dwelling.
“My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth” (v.2.) Here the writer is turning their focus away from earthly surroundings. Acknowledging that our true rescue only comes from God. The One who made heaven and earth.
“He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber” (v.3). We know that on rocky and dangerous mountain paths, one can slip and fall.
we must lift up our eyes above the hills; we must look to God who makes all earthly things to us what they are.
We must see all our help in God. That from him we must expect it. Remembering that He does it in His own way and time.
This psalm teaches us to comfort ourselves in the Lord, when we face difficulties and our dangers are great.
With God we shall not fear. He keeps us stable and secure through all of life’s difficult tests and trials.
It is also good to know that no matter how tired those around us may get, God is forever awake. He will always maintain a continuous, uninterrupted watch over every believer. He is our true help and protection.
It is a wonderful feeling to know that we can always seek and find help in our Heavenly Father.
A WORD OF PRAYER
Father, we lift up our eyes above the hills, looking to You, the One who makes all earthly things to us what they are. We take comfort in knowing that all our help comes from You. Knowing that we can expect it, but in Your own way and time. Thank You for always being there for us when difficulties and dangers are greatest. Keeping Your divine protection around us. Fill our homes with Your peace, strength, and never-ending love. We place our lives in Your safe and faithful hands.
