And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet. 2 Samuel 9:3 KJV
It isn’t hard to wonder how David could have been called a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel13:14 KJV, Acts 13:22 KJV).
David had many sins and shortcomings.
We find the answer to this in 2 Samuel 9.
The Bible tells us about how several years earlier, King Saul had attempted to kill David.
How after Saul’s death, for years, his descendants fought David (2 Samuel 3:1 KJV).
In the end, David assumed full power.
He was put in the position as the King of Israel.
We learn more about Saul’s family.
He had a handicapped grandson, Mephibosheth, who was the only remaining member of his family.
Despite all that David had been through with Saul, he invited his grandson to the palace.
Mephibosheth was really scared. He knew the history between his grandfather and King David.
But David assured him that he was safe.
That no harm was to become him.
He just wanted to “(show) him the kindness of God” (2 Samuel 9:3 KJV).
David did it by giving Mephibosheth all of Saul’s property.
He even invited him to dine at the royal table as long as he lived.
His kindness reflects God’s kindness and love for us.
Think about our own salvation.
How when we were helpless, God offered us mercy and grace (Ephesians 2:1-10 KJV).
How He gave us acceptance and a place of honor (Ephesians 2:19-3:6 KJV).
He has always provided for our daily needs (Matthew 6:25-34 KJV).
The right kind of heart is a kind heart like God’s.
Let us desire to be the one known as a person after God’s own heart.
We all have the ability to do it.
A WORD OF PRAYER
Father, it is always amazing to see how the Word brings to light all the positive influence in our lives. How the little deeds of kindness can mean so much to someone’s life. Thank You for being our prime example of what it means to be kind. It really does make for a life filled with happiness and joy.
In Jesus’ Name We Pray, Amen
